Sugar versus honey, does switching from sugar to honey boost weight loss..?
The short answer… No.
Teaspoon for teaspoon, sugar and honey are similar in total calories. Both have an intermediate GI value, with honey having the slightly lower value – so, it is best to include them as part of a mixed meal as opposed to on their own (to lower the GI). They both provide “empty kilojoules” meaning they contain energy without providing vitamins, minerals, fibre, etc. and often replace more nutritious foods. They can be included as part of a healthy diet, in moderation, but note that the extra energy that sugar or honey contributes to your diet can, over time, contribute towards weight gain. As an alternative, you could consider a natural sweetener e.g. Xylitol.
